Swimming

Swimwear and other swimming gear

When the lakes freeze over and your neighbors drain their pools, there are still lots of indoor swimming options. Swimming is an excellent activity that strengthens the arms, legs, core muscles and overall cardiovascular stamina.

Community Centers

Community centers and municipal recreational complexes provide access to indoor swimming pools. For less than $60 per month you can get a daily pass to use their facilities. If you want to go with your family or friends just to have fun, free swims are best suited for you. If you want to test your endurance and get a superior cardiovascular workout, go to a scheduled lane swim.

Swimsuits

Men and boys typically wear swim trunks – athletic shorts with built in liners for support. Board shorts – longer, surf-inspired styles – are becoming more popular and serve the same purpose. The speedo is a suit that fits like briefs, best for racing. Community pools do not allow shorts or boxer shorts to be worn as swimwear, so have an appropriate suit with you when you head to the pool.

Womens swimsuits vary in style and cut. One-piece suits are most common, covering the trunk and chest of the body, usually with an open back. Made of lycra or other elastic materials, these swimming suits are very form fitting. Some have extra fabric to create the effect of a skirt or shirt, but most suits are cut simply. Two-piece bathing suits expose the midriff; one piece fitting like underwear and one fitting like a bra. This type of swimsuit is also known as a bikini.

Miraclesuit swimwear uses Miaratex fabric to help people sensitive about their weight look slimmer. Miratex has three-times the spandex of most other suits. The extra flexibility of the fabric is designed to flatter the curves of the body. Pleating and draping also help to cover trouble spots, helping women of all ages and sizes look their best in traditionally unforgiving swimwear.

If chlorine bothers your eyes, for under $20 you can get a pair of swim goggles. This eyewear keeps water out so you can see where you are going and stay in your lane. Like soccer, swimming is a fun and a cheap way to stay active that doesn't have to stop for the year when the summer ends.
