Depending on how rustic you like your time outside to be, camping can be a really cheap way to enjoy nature and get away for a few days. If you want the utmost in comfort and all the latest gadgets to make your campsite just like home, then it can get expensive. Nonetheless, camping is an excellent way to spend time in nature and enjoy the natural world.
To go light camping, the most important part is a good camp bag. This is going to be the vehicle that gets you and your gear to your site. The external-frame bag is the classic camping pack, with a large contained sack near the top. It is usually made of nylon (something that will resist water and wear) and ties shut so there is room to adjust for large loads. The bottom has part of the frame exposed, space for your sleeping bag, tent, ground sheet or dishes. This is a much better option than relying on some old boot camp bag that you may have lying around.
The internal frame bag is a new school of thought, where the metal frame is hidden in the thick foam strapping that secures the camper to the bag – a much more comfortable and ergonomic option. The bag is one large sack with compartments and straps on the exterior to add large items. The former is less high-tech and therefore cheaper, so for camping on a budget the external frame may be best.
Tents can range from less than $80 to more than $400 for one the same size, depending on the materials used. Thin, permeable materials and shoddy zippers and stitching are typically found on a cheap camping tent, whereas expensive ones usually go together easier and have waterproof and antimicrobial materials. You can find camping tents for sale online at almost any sporting goods store's website, as well as camping-specific retailers' sites.
A good camping boot goes to the ankle, is made of leather or another tough material and has a tough sole for traversing the landscape. The insoles are usually very cushioned and the boots let moisture out so your feet stay dry and comfortable. A good pair can be found for around $100, a small price to pay for quality footwear.
If you build your shelter, cook over a fire and catch all your food by hunting or fishing, camping can be almost free of cost. But for most, a good investment in equipment is important to make your experience fun.
