Tennis is a fast-paced racquet sport that is exciting to watch and even more exciting to play. Trying to send the ball past your opponent on the other side of the tennis net takes focus, aim, fast feet and stamina. While tennis can get very competitive, it is still a really fun recreational activity and perfect way to get outside.
The tennis racquet is made of a web of nylon strings stretched in an oval frame. By selecting a model slightly heavier or lighter or with more or less striking area, you can tune your game to be more powerful or to have more control. The best way to choose a racquet is to try it out. Most tennis clubs have pro shops where you can serve a few balls to test the performance of the racquet. Beginner racquets can be found for under $50, but you can find models upwards of $300.
Selecting a shoe is different for every player since everyone's feet are built differently and everyone has a different playing style. A good tennis shoe will have a wider sole for balance, a strong upper construction to support the foot during lateral movement and a secure lacing system to keep the foot from slipping in the shoe (and from coming untied). Womens tennis shoes tend to be lighter in general; ladies who need a lot of support may find that a smaller men's shoe fits better. Kids tennis shoes are typically scaled-down versions of men's and women's models. Adult models can be found for less than $100 but can get up to $200 or more while kid's shoes are usually $50 to $100.
Most communities have courts free of charge for people to use. Start slow by standing relatively close to the net and serving underhand. Unlike a badminton birdie, a tennis ball is hard to control when hit hard and beginners will spend most of their time firing them over the fence. Getting a good rally going is key since it lets you practice returning and tracking the ball. Tennis is excellent exercise and the perfect excuse to get some sun.
